Penn Jersey She Devils vs. Man’s Ruin Review

The International Sports Center rocked on October 24th 2009 when the hometown Penn Jersey She Devils hosted a game against the visiting Man’s Ruin team from Chester, NY.

This game saw the return to action of local favorites Lucky Luciano, Sloppy Jo, and Deuces Wild from injuries and rookie standout Hellanor Rollsevelt who had scheduling conflicts the past couple games. Their return was most noticeable. This was one of the best games I’ve ever witnessed in over 2 years of following the OSDA.

In a very defensive game, the PJSD’s defeated MR by a score of 59-31. The score does not reflect how close the game seemed to everyone in attendance. The blocking very hard with standout performances by PJSD’s Lucky Luciano and MR’s Tienty Deville and Tazer.

The PJSD’s are working very well on defense and offense and the pack blockers did a very good job picking off the opposing blockers to pave the way for their incoming jammers. Every team should follow their lead because it made a huge difference on the score board.

Going back to the 2008 OSDA Championships to now, Man’s Ruin has to be the most improved team in the league. It’s a real pleasure to watch them skate together as a cohesive team and their hard work is very evident.

The next date in Mt. Laurel is November 21st and will feature 3 games. The first two games will be 2-15 minute periods and the fans will select which teams skate each other. The winners of games 1 and 2 will face each other in the championship game which will consist of 4 – 15 minute periods.

Good Luck to everyone!

Penn Jersey vs. Richmond Derby Demons Review

On Saturday, September 12th, the Penn Jersey She-Devils hosted a co-ed game against the visiting Richmond Derby Demons at their home rink in Mt. Laurel, NJ, losing by one point with a final score of 59-58.

The game was the tightest match yet in Mt. Laurel and featured two closely matched teams.

My selection for MVP of the game was Mr. Mayhem from Richmond, scoring an incredible 36 points. In addition to Mr. Mayhem, Richmond came to skate with their regulars Demalisha Durga, Square Cat, Minor Threat, and RawJawBone. A recent addition to Richmond is former Hooligan – Chainsaw, who now lives in Richmond. Augmenting the team were South Jersey’s Billy Rae Siren and Man’s Ruin’s Tienty Deville along with Tazer. Also skating for Richmond were Eve L. Redhead and Rotcoddam “doc”. The latter I had never seen before and was impressed with her defensive skills.

Penn Jersey had 12 skaters on board – Classy Chassis, Miss Chievous, Wags, JD Babaganoosh, ShamPain, Cloberella, D-Machine, Shillelagh Law, Mace Kelly, Crash Money, Freudy N. Slip and Baby Skates Nelson. Wags was all over the track – blocking, jamming and pivot. It is very noticeable how he keeps looking behind to watch the approaching jammer and is often in the right place at the right time.

The action was all over the track and both teams should be very proud of their performances.

Richmond’s Durga was moved to tears. KUDOS to Richmond!

On a side note – I was very impressed with the announcing by Cello and Rhonda. Very well done.

The next game in Mt. Laurel is October 24th and will feature the Penn Jersey She-Devils vs. Man’s Ruin from Chester, NY.

PJSD vs SJ Double Header Review

Saturday, June 27th, the Penn Jersey She-Devils hosted a double-header pitting their two teams (Dishonor Roll and Sadistic Sweethearts) again South Jersey’s two teams (Rollin’ Barren Bandits and Big Rig Betties).

Although both Penn Jersey teams won their games, the skating was hard and there were injuries to prove it. The first game was won by Dishonor Roll won 1st game – 97-45 and the Sadistic Sweethearts won the 2nd game — 58-44.

Hit the hardest were the Sadistic Sweethearts who lost one of their co-captains – Miss Chievous to an injured knee, their ace jammer Sloppy Jo with a broken wrist and their other co-captain Lucky Luciano skating with an injured ankle. She told me that it should be in a cast, but there’s no stopping Lucky! Dishonor Roll’s Hellanor Rollsevelt, the amazing rookie jammer, also took a very hard fall, but she got up and kept on going. Like Sloppy Jo, she is one of the most promising rookies I have ever seen and is easily becoming a top-notch jammer.

It must be noted that Classy Chassis not only gave one of her patented leg whips, she also gave a classic reverse whip that had me up and out of my seat. She just knows those moves make us old-school fans smile because as she skated by she smiled and pointed our way.

South Jersey’s Billy Rae Siren always impresses. She is an all-around talent with both speed and exceptional balance. Lady & the Trample and BreakHer Baker are very accomplished jammers and contributed a lot to their respective teams. Solid performances were given by South Jersey’s Mos Deathly, The Beast of Burton and G-Unit.

The improvement of several PJSD rookies or 2nd year skaters must be noted. Keep up the great work, girls! I was so impressed with Miss Chievous, who kept injuring her knee until she had to leave the game in the 4th period. She just kept going and threw some of the hardest blocks in the game. She might be little, but she is so talented and dangerous out there. Wanda Riot continues to improve and wa s noticeably picking off the opposing blockers in the pack for her jammers to pass. It is a joy to watch the enthusiasm of Sky Scrape Her, who threw a wicked block and almost surprised herself. Excellent jamming by ShamPain has become a given, she didn’t fail to impress. More solid performances were given by PJSD’s LateTBug, Deuces Wild, Cloberella and Goody Two Skates.

The next Mt. Laurel game is scheduled for Saturday, September 12th.

CCRE Review from Black Eyed Susan Skate Shop

Black Eyed Susan Skate Shop

This past weekend, roller derby took over the beach resort town of Wildwood, New Jersey, thanks to the hard work of the South Jersey Derby Girls of the Old School Derby Association.

If you weren’t lucky enough to be there to take part in their great blocking and jamming workshops, and truly funtastic roller derby games, all of which took place in the best roller derby venue we have seen yet – on the beach, inside the Wildwoods Convention Center, beside the flashing lights of the midway – you can do the next best thing and watch for it in an upcoming episode of Food Network’s “Dinner Impossible,” scheduled to air in the upcoming season.

Generosity was what was truly colossal about this roller derby expo. The men and women of OSDA welcomed vets and newbies alike, and served up giant plates of whoop ass to all comers on the track. After the final whistle blew, everyone in the hall, including the entire audience, sat down to a gourmet meal of 20 different food items whipped up by Chef Robert Irvine and the roller girls of OSDA.

Skating by OSDA rules was a first for Mibbs Breakin’ Ribs, Siouxsie Slaughter and Marzipain, who all participated in the All Star Game of Sharks v. Stingrays, which included men and women, competing in alternating periods, from the Richmond Derby Demons, Mans Ruin Roller Derby, Hooligans Roller Derby, Penn Jersey She Devils, South Jersey Deviants, and South Jersey Derby Girls. It was an absolute blast and BESSS will be there again next year!

NRDHF event review

I headed down to the Flying W Resort in Medford, NJ for the Friday evening Meet and Greet. As usual, I was a bit early, arriving around 6:45pm. I called Gary Powers and found out he was in the dining room with Vinnie Gandolfo, Jim Trotter and his lovely wife. I believe her first name is Jackie, but don’t quote me. I’m the worst with names. Jim “The King” Trotter looks very good! You’d never believe he is 70 years old. Since he finished his skating career, he has taken up golf and even told me he can hit ‘em further than some 20-30 year olds! Look at him, I believe it! Not only is he a nice man but he is really funny too. His wife is simply put – a real lady. Shortly after I joined the crowd, in came the Atkinsons – Buddy Jr. and wife Dru Scott who celebrated their 50th anniversary yesterday! Buddy stole the show the rest of the night. The man has a genuine wit and is an excellent story teller. I had a great time listening to his stories and watching two of the OSDA skaters – Lucky and Jeff who absorbed every word like sponges.

Judy Arnold came in with her friends Karen and I totally missed the other ladies’ name. Tom Wersderfer, a member here and former Roller Games referee showed up a bit later, as did Arnold “Skip” Schoen and other members of the PJSD’s. Listening to Buddy made the time fly by and before you knew it, it was almost 12:30am. So, I headed home to rest up for a long day to come.

My son Matt and I had tickets for the NRDHF banquet at the Flying Wwhich was from noon-5pm. Matt and I got their early and helped set up the concession stand tables. Matt worked the tables the entire 5 hours and I was very proud of him, as he has had zero retail experience, but one adult after another kept telling me that he’s such a nice young man. I’m biased, so I agreed with them. lol

Throughout the banquet, one skater after another – Richard Brown, Judy Sowinski, Skip Schoen, The Atkinsons, Vinnie Gandolfo, Hazel Roop (who skated in 1936!!), Crystal Prioleau, Lynn Congleton, Richard Perti, Cameron Glenn, joined the skaters of the OSDA and shared great stories and good food. I watched over my son for the majority of the event and helped the OSDA sell the game programs. Phil Berrier did a FANTASTIC job on this program and I’d rank it up there with the best of the best.

During the banquet, Gary allowed Tim Spann and I to present awards to Vinnie Gandolfo and Skip Schoen. I presented a trophy to Vinnie, who was so animated during the 2007 Hall of Fame event, yelling “WHERE’S MY TROPHY?!” to anyone who would listen. I think he was a little surprised, to say the least. Tim and a couple other referees presented a trophy to Skip as their head referee and mentor. Gary presented the first Pioneer award to Hazel Roop. What an amazing and sweet lady! I was honored to meet her.

After the event, Gary, Skip, Bobby, Matt and I headed to the rink and then went to McDonald’s for something quick to eat. We got back to the rink and quickly got kicked out of the dressing room by Coach Sowinski. You’ve haven’t lived until you’ve been ordered around by Judy Sowinski. Gotta love her! lol. Matt, Tom and I set up all the chairs for the VIP section, and we watched as a large crowd headed into the International Sports Center. I could be wrong, but I think this might have been their biggest crowd.

The skating? The best I’ve ever seen at an OSDA game. They had 4 -15 minute periods between the Penn Jersey She Devils and the South Jersey Derby Dolls which was won by the Penn Jersey She Devils by a blow out — 77 – 21.

In between the 1st and 2nd period and the 2nd and 3rd period were two 15 minute co-ed scrimmages between Man’s Ruin of Chester,NY and Richmond Derby Demons of Virginia. Man’s Ruin won this close contest by a score of 33-30.

The game MVP was Classy Chassis of Penn Jersey She Devils who scored 23 pts, threw a classic leg whip that had the pros pointing and saying, “Did you see that?!” and blocked with the best of ‘em.

The men’s MVP was Siegtermans of Man’s Ruin. The Man’s Ruin skaters all skated with their last names, no nick names. That made an old school fan like me very happy. A sign of things to come? I HOPE SO!

A Founder’s Cup was presented to the founder of the OSDA – Ken Sikes, a member here who had been hospitalized for quite a while and everyone was very happy to see his return! The girls all call him “Papa Bear” and he was sorely missed during all the preparations of this weekend!

Guess who won the 50-50?! Up until now, I really never win anything, so imagine my shock when I looked at my tickets and saw the winner? OOOOOOHHHHHHH YEAH! lol. So, I’ll stopped on that high note. It’ll probably be the last thing I ever win, but I enjoyed it.

Jersey Joe

One thing I forgot to say:

Buddy Atkinson Jr. presented the OSDA championship trophy – The Atkinson Cup to the winners.

Judy Arnold presented the female MVP trophy – the Judy Arnold Cup.

Arnold “Skip” Schoen presented the male MVP trophy – the Arnold Schoen Cup.

Sorry I overlooked those facts.

This is what I love about the OSDA. Besides being coached by Judy Sowinski and Skip Schoen, these girls and guys respect the past and are truly doing their best to bring back the authentic sport!

Dishonor Roll vs. 100 Proof Honeys

Halloween came early to Mt. Laurel in the form of “Release The Bats”, a Roller Derby contest between teams from different leagues within the OSDA. Penn Jersey She Devils’ Dishonor Roll hosted Man’s Ruin’s Hundred Proof Honeys.

This was only the second game skated by the Hundred Proof Honeys and they were missing two of their top jammers. One of whom broke down on the drive from Chester, NY. Three members of South Jersey filled in admirably.

Dishonor Roll won the game by a large margin – 39 to 22. The winners saw the return of their co-captain Miss Chievous and she didn’t fail to impress. In addition, it must be noted that Hard Licker is becoming a stronger blocker with each game. Excellent jamming by Classy Chassis – 7 pts., Hella Kitty 11 pts.(who injured her knee in the 2nd period), and game high scorer Freudy N. Slip -13 pts. really paced Dishonor Roll onto victory.

For the visiting 100 Proof Honeys, strong jamming came from Billy Rae Siren – One Hit Wonder, Tienty Deville, Jersey Jezebel (gotta love that name), and co-captain Devlin Blue Eyes.

There was an Australian Rules (legal blocking) match race after the 2nd period, in which Bobby Carnage squeaked out a win over Chuck Grenades. It was a close one all the way to the end.

Next match is November 8th – the Sowinski Cup which will feature the top two teams – the Sadistic Sweethearts vs. the Fallen Angels. You can bet the Polish Ace will be watching closely!

South Jersey Championship review

This Weekend Rocked My Socks Off! (Great post from Myra Venge)

So knowing the amount of driving to be done, the excitement experienced by this weekend’s events have left me with a renewed excitement for roller derby, which totally surpassed the extra mileage and gas money it took to make it all happen. It was completely worth while.

Teammate Wry Cooter and I went North of the Mason Dixon line this weekend to help out South Jersey Derby in their league’s Championship game. Held in the convention center at Wildwood, NJ, the Big Rig Betties and Rollin’ Barren Bandits battled it out to see which was the best South Jersey team. Luckily, Wry and I were on the same team: the Rollin’ Barren Bandits.

First of all, I must say that the event couldn’t have had a better location. For those of you who haven’t been there, the Wildwood Convention Center is on the boardwalk, and our rink was placed with a magnificent oceanview backdrop through the windowed wall. While I had skated on polished concrete before, I had never had the pleasure to play a game on it, and I must say that I think I prefer it to polished wood and sport court. It was fast and smooth…like skating on glass. Thank goodness my wheels had enough grip to keep me from sliding too much. However, the concrete doesn’t give at all like wood or sport court, and so I now have very faint bruises on my wrists from where my wrist guards dissipated the impact.

I hadn’t played with my team’s members before, but between jams and periods I think we did a stellar job of collaborating together on plays and position changes. The game itself was neck and neck until the very last jam, when the Bandits got ahead with 3 points for the win.

The next day, we added Miss Chievous to our party, and headed up the Jersey coast to the National Roller Derby Hall of Fame in New York since they were revealing the names of the 2008 inductees. Once there we had an awesome time meeting and talking with roller derby greats like Judy Arnold, Little Richard Brown, and Judy Sowinski. As always, Gary Powers was a most gracious host, and the collection memorabilia that he offers for display cannot be beat! It was a true pleasure.

Make sure to check out the pictures from this weekend. My only regret was that I didn’t take more…
