OSDA Men’s Derby Coordinator

D-Maschine at practice in Mt Laurel, NJ with PJSD. As always, photos by King Taco.

D-Maschine started roller skating in April of 2007 and started as a rookie on the men’s team. Tim skated with the Hooligans in their June game of that same year. Tim is a Level 1 Certified Referee in the OSDA working on refereeing a few more games for further certification. Tim chose the #15 since it’s the same number as his wife.

Tim is the Web Master of this site (as well as the Hooligans Web Site and the Roller Guys Blog) and the new Director of the Men’s Division of the OSDA. Tim’s wife, Hard Licker, is a member of the She Devils travel team, the temporary Secretary of the OSDA and co-owner of the Red Shirt Gear store. Tim is a huge fan of Roller Derby and has a growing collection of memorabilia (including a pair of Ann Calvello’s shorts) and DVDs from the early Roller Derby games. His favorite old time skaters are: Judy Sowinski, Skip Schoen, Ralphie Valladares, Richard Brown, Buddy Atkison Sr. and Jr., Charlie O’Connell and all the Gamons.

Tim: recommends 187 Pro Knee Pads, Riedell skate boots, Triple 8 helmets, Sure Grip XK-4 Single Action Plates, Bones Swiss bearings and Answer derby wheels – especially D-Rods, G-Rods and Omegas.

Roller derby is typically an all-girl sport, but some leagues are coed. Franks’ son Kenny Taylor, 18, of Vineland skates under the name “That Kid Kenny” with the South Jersey Derby Girls. Taylor enjoys the sport, but admits he had some trouble getting over the golden rule: “Boys don’t hit girls.”

Franks gave him some motherly encouragement

“I knocked him down a couple of times,” Franks said. “Then Billy Rae christened him. He learned to hit back.”

PJSD Intraleague game review

I just got home from the after party and had an excellent time at the game in Mt. Laurel between the Sadistic Sweethearts and Dishonor Roll. The Sweethearts won the game handily — 49-23, and the one thing I noticed, that was lacking in the October game was defense. Tonight they were blocking all over the place.

I have to tell you all, that it is an absolute pleasure to know all of you. First it was a thrill for me to meet Judy and Skip, and I’ll admit to still be a bit star-struck. Sorry, Judy! I promise to work on that. lol Now, I’ve grown to really love these girls. I had the best time watching Cherry Bomber jamming against Classy Chassis and who how can’t you love the blocking of Lucky Luciano and Hard Licker and the tenacity of Miss Chievous, Mohammed Mollie, Stigmata Stain, Sham Pain and Tougie Muffy, just to name a few?

Thanks to Binky for our pins, which my son Matt and I wore proudly through the game and even to the after party.

Thanks to Gary Powers for being a good friend and fun guy.

Thanks to Skip, Judy and Angie for the great company and conversation. Next month, look out, it won’t be the night before Easter and we’ll be ready to party hardy.

Oh, and by the way, we loved the 1/2 time show. Those dancers were very talented young ladies. Like I said to Judy, Tim and Gary, this was SO MUCH better than a penalty wheel! lol

See ya all next month!
